More than a billion training videos are watched daily on YouTube, and people still prefer to watch how to do something and then apply what they see in a hands-on scenario, rather than reading manuals or even taking instructor-led courses.

Driving theory and techniques can easily be learned and refined via a smartphone or tablet application, or via online courses. These courses range from learning to drive a car or motorbike to specialised courses such as forklift courses and driving and operating simulators.

Independent beginners can make rapid progress without being hindered by the collective skills of the students in the classroom.

However, learning to drive with the application has a number of disadvantages. Some students are not computer-controlled or prefer hands-on learning. It may not be possible to discuss the course with other participants. Students may not be able to afford to buy enough data to play a lot of video. On a smartphone, video details can be lost. New drivers can become overconfident before they have any real experience in developing hazards.

For managers and trainers who use an LMS, transparency of information is a great advantage. Instead of disappearing into a course where the attendant does not know what is being taught, the attendant is familiar with all the training material and can look in detail at how the driver has answered the questions.
